It is a time consuming process to break, train and school horses.  The art is to be kind but firm with them.  Get angry and start shouting at them and you have already lost the battle.  Before you even try to back a horse there are many painful hours of ground work to do first.  When you have the absolute trust of the animal you then start the next step to back them.
